However, it is important to seek prompt treatment as the symptoms can be painful, uncomfortable, and can lead to more serious complications. Fortunately, MyCare Express Clinic urgent care is open 7 days a week from 8:00am – 8:00pm to help alleviate your symptoms quickly.

What Is A Bladder Infection?

A bladder infection, also known as cystitis, is one of the most common bacterial infections and is caused by a growth of bacteria inside the bladder. Bladder infections can be classified in one of two ways: simple (acute) or complicated.

Simple bladder infections are caused by the migration of bacteria in the bladder. Women are more susceptible to this type of bladder infection due to the structure of the female urinary system.

Complicated bladder infections are classified as such because they are caused by abnormalities in the urinary system. Due to the structure of the male urinary system (specifically the longer male urethra), all bladder infections are considered “complicated” when associated with males.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Bladder Infection?

Bladder infections cause irritation and swelling in the bladder and urethra, which usually manifests itself in one of a number of predictable ways:

How Is A Bladder Infection Diagnosed?

The medical provider at MyCare Express Clinic will discuss your symptoms with you, along with a physical exam, which may be enough to diagnose a bladder infection. A urine analysis may be performed, which checks for bacteria, blood or pus in the urine. A urine culture can also be done to help determine the type of bacteria causing the infection. If bladder infections are recurring, or the cause of the infection requires more than medicine alone, further testing or more involved treatments will be needed.

How Are Bladder Infections Treated?

Simple bladder infections are typically treated with a course of antibiotics prescribed by our medical providers. Women who frequently suffer bladder infections may be prescribed preventative courses of antibiotics.

How Long Do Bladder Infections Typically Last?

Improvement usually begins to take place within a day or so of taking the first dose of antibiotic. Most patients with simple bladder infections will be symptom free within three days. Those with complicated bladder infections may have symptoms for a prolonged period of time. If your symptoms have not improved within four days, contact us.
